Privet (ligustrum)
Synopsis of privet
Privet refers to several species of evergreen or deciduous shrubs in the Ligustrum genus, most commonly Ligustrum lucidum (glossy privet) in herbal medicine. Native to East Asia, Ligustrum lucidum is widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is known as Nu Zhen Zi (女贞子). The fruit is the primary part used medicinally and is prized for its tonifying, antioxidant, and liver- and kidney-supportive properties.
Privet fruit is rich in oleanolic acid, ligustroside, flavonoids, polysaccharides, and other antioxidant compounds. It is considered a Yin tonic in TCM, meaning it helps restore fluids, cool internal heat, and nourish the body's deep, vital energy reserves. It is most often used to support liver and kidney health, enhance immune function, improve eyesight, and counteract the effects of aging, particularly symptoms like dizziness, tinnitus, graying hair, sore back and knees, and fatigue.
In Western herbalism, privet is not commonly used, though growing interest in TCM has brought Ligustrum lucidum into some integrative formulations, often paired with herbs like eclipta, rehmannia, or goji berry for nourishing and restorative effects.
Historical Use in Medicine:
Ligustrum lucidum has been used for over 1,000 years in Traditional Chinese Medicine, where it is classified as a tonic for the liver and kidney Yin. Classical Chinese herbal texts describe its use for vision problems, premature graying of hair, and weakness of the lumbar spine and knees—all signs of depleted Kidney essence in TCM theory. It is also said to clear heat from deficiency, helping those who suffer from night sweats or chronic inflammation due to Yin deficiency.
Privet fruit is often included in anti-aging and longevity formulas, as it was traditionally thought to "strengthen the essence" and "brighten the eyes." It was also used to support recovery after illness, especially when vitality and blood were depleted. Because of its gentle nature, Nu Zhen Zi is often recommended for long-term use.
In modern research, extracts of Ligustrum lucidum have demonstrated immunomodulatory, hepatoprotective, and antioxidant effects, validating some of its traditional applications. It has also shown potential in enhancing bone density, protecting the liver, and reducing oxidative stress in animal studies.
Today, privet remains a valued herb in TCM, particularly for aging support, post-illness recovery, and immune resilience, though it is used with careful consideration of the patient's Yin-Yang balance. It is not to be confused with European privet (Ligustrum vulgare), which is ornamental and considered mildly toxic if ingested.
