Overalkalinity
Synopsis of Overalkalinity
Overalkalinity, or metabolic alkalosis, is a condition where the body’s pH becomes too alkaline, typically with a blood pH above 7.45. Though the body tightly regulates pH, certain imbalances in electrolytes, fluid loss, or excessive intake of alkaline substances can tip this balance. Overalkalinity is less common than acidosis but can result in serious systemic effects, particularly affecting muscle function, nerve signaling, and cardiovascular health.
Types of alkalosis:
-
Metabolic alkalosis: Caused by loss of acid (e.g., from vomiting) or excessive bicarbonate
-
Respiratory alkalosis: Caused by low carbon dioxide due to rapid breathing
-
Compensated alkalosis: The body tries to restore balance through kidney or lung adjustments
Common causes include:
-
Prolonged vomiting or use of diuretics
-
Excessive consumption of alkaline water or bicarbonate supplements
-
Potassium or chloride deficiencies
-
Adrenal disorders (e.g., hyperaldosteronism)
-
Overuse of antacids or baking soda
-
Severe dehydration or overuse of laxatives
Symptoms may include:
-
Confusion or lightheadedness
-
Muscle twitching, cramps, or weakness
-
Tingling in the face, hands, or feet
-
Nausea or vomiting
-
Heart palpitations
-
Shallow breathing (in response to elevated pH)
When to see a doctor:
Seek prompt care if symptoms are severe, persistent, or accompanied by electrolyte abnormalities, arrhythmias, or neuromuscular issues. Diagnosis involves blood gas analysis, electrolyte panels, and underlying cause evaluation. Treatment targets the root cause and may include fluid replacement, potassium or chloride repletion, and adjusting medications or diet.
Natural remedies for Overalkalinity
Avoid Excessive Alkaline Water or Supplements: Especially bicarbonate-based formulas.
Limit Long-Term Antacid Use Without Supervision: May mask or worsen alkalosis.
Eat a Balanced Diet: Avoid extreme alkaline or elimination diets unless medically advised.
Monitor Electrolyte Intake: Ensure adequate potassium, magnesium, and chloride levels.
Stay Hydrated with Electrolyte-Balanced Fluids: Supports kidney compensation and pH balance.
