Synopsis of Headache (sinus)

A sinus headache occurs when the sinuses (air-filled cavities in the skull) become inflamed or congested, typically due to infection (sinusitis), allergies, or cold weather. The inflammation causes pressure and pain in the forehead, cheeks, nose bridge, or around the eyes. Pain often intensifies when bending forward, lying down, or with sudden head movement.

Unlike migraines or tension headaches, sinus headaches usually occur with other sinus symptoms, such as:

  • Nasal congestion

  • Runny nose

  • Facial pressure or tenderness

  • Postnasal drip

  • Reduced sense of smell

  • Ear pressure or fullness

Many headaches believed to be "sinus" in origin are actually migraines or tension headaches, so accurate diagnosis is key. True sinus headaches typically occur with an upper respiratory infection or allergy flare-up.

When to see a doctor:
If sinus pain persists beyond 10 days, worsens after improvement, or is accompanied by fever or thick nasal discharge, a bacterial sinus infection may require antibiotics. Chronic sinus pain may signal allergies or structural nasal issues.
