Synopsis of Gout
Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints, leading to sudden and severe episodes of pain, swelling, redness, and tenderness—most commonly in the big toe, though it can affect the ankles, knees, fingers, or elbows. These episodes are known as gout attacks and may last for days to weeks.
Gout develops when uric acid levels in the blood become too high (hyperuricemia), usually due to excessive production or poor excretion by the kidneys. Uric acid is a byproduct of purine metabolism (found in red meat, seafood, alcohol, and some vegetables). When it crystallizes in joints, it triggers an intense immune response.
Key risk factors:
-
Diet rich in purines (organ meats, shellfish, alcohol, sugary drinks)
-
Obesity
-
Hypertension or kidney disease
-
Certain medications (diuretics, low-dose aspirin)
-
Genetics
-
Dehydration
When to see a doctor:
Seek care if you experience sudden joint pain, swelling, or heat—especially if it recurs. Gout is treatable with medications to lower uric acid levels and reduce inflammation. Chronic gout can damage joints and cause visible urate deposits (tophi).
Natural remedies for Gout
Avoid High-Purine Foods: Limit red meat, alcohol, shellfish, and organ meats.
Hydration: Drink plenty of water to help flush uric acid through the kidneys.
Cherry Juice or Cherries: May reduce uric acid and inflammation.
Cold Compresses: Help reduce joint swelling and pain during flare-ups.
Weight Management and Low-Sugar Diet: Reduces risk and recurrence of attacks.
