Synopsis of Gall Stones

Gallstones are hardened deposits that form in the gallbladder, typically composed of cholesterol, bile salts, or bilirubin. They vary in size and may be silent (causing no symptoms) or lead to painful attacks when they obstruct bile flow. This condition is known as cholelithiasis, and it is especially common in women, people over 40, those who are overweight, and individuals with diets high in fat or low in fiber.

Common symptoms (when present) include:

  • Sudden, intense pain in the upper right abdomen or under the ribs

  • Nausea or vomiting after fatty meals

  • Bloating, belching, or indigestion

  • Pain that radiates to the back or right shoulder

  • Jaundice (if a stone blocks the bile duct)

Gallstones may result from bile becoming too concentrated, slow gallbladder emptying, or imbalance in bile components. If not managed, complications such as cholecystitis (gallbladder inflammation), pancreatitis, or bile duct infection (cholangitis) may develop.

When to see a doctor:
Seek medical care if you experience intense or recurring abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, fever, or signs of infection. Ultrasound is typically used to confirm diagnosis.

Natural remedies for Gall Stones

Reduce Fat Intake: Helps prevent bile congestion and pain from fat-triggered contractions.

Eat Smaller, More Frequent Meals: Eases bile flow and reduces pressure on the gallbladder.

Increase Fiber and Hydration: Supports bile movement and prevents sludge buildup.

Avoid Rapid Weight Loss: This can increase cholesterol release and gallstone formation.

Use Digestive Bitters or Lemon Water: Traditionally used to stimulate bile flow.
