Synopsis of Hair

Hair is a keratin-based filament that grows from follicles in the skin, primarily on the scalp but also on other parts of the body. It serves protective, sensory, and thermoregulatory roles, and plays a significant part in personal identity and aesthetic appearance. Each hair strand grows from a follicle, which is nourished by blood vessels and surrounded by oil glands (sebaceous glands) that keep the hair and scalp moisturized.

Hair growth occurs in a cycle with three phases:

  • Anagen (growth phase): Lasts 2–7 years depending on genetics.

  • Catagen (transition phase): A brief period when hair growth stops.

  • Telogen (resting/shedding phase): Lasts a few months before the hair falls out and a new one begins growing.

Healthy hair requires sufficient protein, iron, zinc, vitamins (particularly B vitamins), and a balanced hormone profile. Hair loss (alopecia), thinning, breakage, or scalp conditions can result from stress, poor nutrition, hormonal imbalance (e.g., thyroid or estrogen), autoimmune issues, medications, or overstyling. Scalp inflammation or infection can also compromise follicle health.
