Evidence supporting the use of: Terpenoids
For the health condition: Allergies (respiratory)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Terpenoids, a diverse class of naturally occurring organic chemicals derived from terpenes, have been investigated for their anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, which are relevant to respiratory allergies such as allergic rhinitis and asthma. Some terpenoids—such as linalool, eucalyptol (1,8-cineole), and thymol—have demonstrated the ability to inhibit the release of pro-inflammatory mediators and modulate immune cell activity in preclinical studies. For example, eucalyptol has shown promise in reducing airway inflammation and improving lung function in asthma patients, as reported in several small clinical studies and animal models. Additionally, animal and in vitro studies suggest that certain terpenoids can suppress histamine release and Th2 cytokine production, both of which play key roles in allergic responses.
However, while these findings provide a scientific rationale for the potential use of terpenoids in managing respiratory allergies, robust clinical evidence in humans remains limited. Most of the supportive data come from laboratory or animal research, with relatively few high-quality, large-scale clinical trials specifically evaluating the efficacy of terpenoids for respiratory allergic conditions. As such, the evidence base is considered preliminary, and further research is required to establish safety, efficacy, and optimal dosing in humans.
