Evidence supporting the use of: Speedwell
For the health condition: Bladder Infection
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Speedwell (Veronica officinalis) has a longstanding history in traditional European herbal medicine, where it has been used for a variety of ailments including respiratory issues, skin problems, and urinary tract complaints such as bladder infections. The traditional use of Speedwell for bladder infections is primarily based on its mild diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties, which herbalists believed could help flush out the urinary tract and alleviate symptoms. However, there is very limited scientific validation for this practice. Modern research on Speedwell is sparse, and most studies focus on its antioxidant or anti-inflammatory effects in vitro or in animal models rather than on clinical outcomes for urinary tract infections. No robust clinical trials or high-quality studies have demonstrated its efficacy or safety specifically for bladder infections. Thus, while Speedwell’s use for bladder infections is rooted in tradition, the evidence supporting its effectiveness is weak, and it should not be relied upon as a primary treatment for urinary tract infections in the absence of stronger evidence or as a substitute for proven therapies.
