Evidence supporting the use of: Osthole
For the health condition: Migraine
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Osthole is a natural coumarin compound primarily found in the plant Cnidium monnieri, which has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for various ailments. Its use for migraine, however, is primarily rooted in traditional practice rather than robust scientific validation. In traditional medicine, Cnidium monnieri has been used to address headaches and neurological discomfort, which may include migraine-like symptoms, but these uses are typically based on broader interpretations of "headache" rather than the specific modern diagnosis of migraine. There is very limited direct clinical research on osthole for migraine in humans. Preclinical studies suggest osthole has anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties, which theoretically could be beneficial in migraine due to the role of neurogenic inflammation in migraine pathophysiology. However, these findings are mostly derived from animal models or in vitro studies and are not specific to migraine. Currently, there are no high-quality clinical trials or systematic reviews supporting the efficacy of osthole in migraine treatment. Thus, its use for this condition is better characterized as traditional, with minimal supporting evidence from modern scientific research.
