Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Nobiletin is a polymethoxylated flavone found primarily in citrus peels. Its potential use in supporting or treating Parkinson's Disease (PD) is based primarily on preclinical scientific research rather than traditional medicine. Several animal studies have explored nobiletin's neuroprotective effects. For example, research in rodent models of PD has shown that nobiletin can improve motor function, reduce oxidative stress, and inhibit neuroinflammation. In these studies, nobiletin appears to protect dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra, potentially through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms as well as modulation of signaling pathways such as CREB and ERK.

Despite these promising findings in animal models, there is a lack of robust clinical evidence in humans. No large-scale clinical trials have evaluated nobiletin for the treatment or prevention of Parkinson's Disease in humans. Therefore, while the scientific foundation is stronger than mere tradition, the evidence is still preliminary and should be considered experimental. The current support for using nobiletin in Parkinson's Disease rests on preclinical data rather than established clinical outcomes.
