Lupin (Lupinus spp.) is a legume that has attracted scientific interest for its potential role in supporting or treating Metabolic Syndrome (MetS). Several clinical and preclinical studies have investigated lupin seed protein and fiber for their effects on lipid metabolism, glycemic control, and cardiovascular risk factors—key components of MetS. Human intervention trials have shown that consumption of lupin-enriched foods can help reduce total and LDL cholesterol levels, modestly lower blood pressure, and improve insulin sensitivity in overweight or dyslipidemic individuals. These effects are attributed to lupin’s high protein and soluble fiber content, as well as its unique amino acid profile, which may influence satiety and glucose metabolism. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews (e.g., Belski et al., 2011; Sirtori et al., 2012; Lovati et al., 2013) provide moderate-quality evidence supporting lupin’s beneficial effects on some MetS markers, though results are not always consistent, and most studies are of short duration and relatively small scale. There is still a need for larger, longer-term randomized controlled trials to firmly establish the extent of lupin’s benefits for MetS. Overall, the use of lupin for metabolic syndrome is supported by a moderate body of scientific evidence, particularly concerning lipid and glycemic parameters, though it is not considered a primary or stand-alone treatment.
