Evidence supporting the use of: Limonene
For the health condition: Congestion (lymphatic)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Limonene is a naturally occurring compound found in citrus oils and is commonly used in traditional or folk medicine. Its use for supporting or treating lymphatic congestion is rooted primarily in traditional practices, especially within aromatherapy and natural health communities. Limonene is believed in these circles to stimulate lymphatic flow and detoxification, often being incorporated into massage oils and topical preparations aimed at promoting circulation and lymph drainage. However, there is a lack of robust scientific evidence to substantiate these claims. While some animal and in vitro studies suggest that limonene may possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, no clinical trials have directly examined its effects on lymphatic congestion in humans. There are also no established pharmacological mechanisms by which limonene would specifically target the lymphatic system for decongestion. As such, its reputation for supporting lymphatic health is largely traditional, and the overall quality and quantity of evidence supporting this use is low.
