L-tyrosine is an amino acid that serves as a precursor to several important neurotransmitters, including dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. The concept of "adrenal fatigue" is not recognized as a medical diagnosis by most mainstream medical organizations, but it is commonly discussed in alternative and integrative health circles. In these communities, adrenal fatigue is thought to result from chronic stress leading to "exhaustion" of the adrenal glands and reduced production of stress hormones.

L-tyrosine is sometimes recommended in this context because it is a building block for catecholamines, which are produced by the adrenal medulla during stress responses. The traditional rationale suggests that supplementing with L-tyrosine may help replenish neurotransmitter levels and support the body's response to ongoing stress, theoretically easing symptoms attributed to adrenal fatigue such as fatigue, brain fog, and low mood.

However, the scientific evidence supporting L-tyrosine's effectiveness for "adrenal fatigue" specifically is limited. While there is some research indicating L-tyrosine may improve cognitive performance under acute stress (such as military or cold exposure studies), there are no robust clinical trials supporting its use for adrenal fatigue as defined by alternative medicine. Thus, its use for this purpose is supported more by tradition and extrapolation than by direct scientific validation.
