Scientific research, including randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses, has shown that intravenous administration of glutathione can help protect against nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy) without compromising the effectiveness of chemotherapy drugs. For example, a 2017 meta-analysis in Supportive Care in Cancer found that glutathione significantly reduced the incidence of neurotoxicity in patients receiving oxaliplatin for colorectal cancer. Similarly, studies have suggested its potential in preventing cisplatin-induced kidney damage.
The proposed mechanism is that glutathione acts as a potent intracellular antioxidant, neutralizing reactive oxygen species generated by chemotherapy and thereby minimizing damage to healthy tissues. However, it is important to note that most studies involve intravenous, not oral, glutathione, and the evidence is not universally conclusive. Some trials have shown no benefit, and questions remain about optimal dosing and timing. Major oncology guidelines (such as ASCO and ESMO) recognize glutathione as a potential supportive therapy but stop short of universally recommending its use, citing the need for further large-scale studies.
