Khella (Ammi visnaga) has been traditionally used in some herbal medicine systems, particularly in the Middle East and Mediterranean regions, for respiratory conditions including coughs and asthma. The primary active constituents in Khella are khellin and visnagin, which are known for their smooth muscle relaxant effects, especially in the bronchi and urinary tract. Historical texts and traditional herbal practices have employed Khella as an antispasmodic and bronchodilator, which could theoretically provide relief in dry (non-productive) cough by relaxing bronchial muscles and reducing spasms that provoke coughing. However, most of the traditional use and limited scientific research has focused on its role in asthma, angina, and kidney stones rather than specifically on dry cough. There is a lack of robust clinical evidence or controlled studies directly assessing the efficacy of Khella for dry cough, and its use for this indication is mainly based on broader traditional respiratory applications. Because of this, the evidence supporting Khella for dry cough is weak, and it should not be considered a primary or well-validated treatment for that symptom. Caution is also advised due to reported side effects and potential toxicity of khellin at higher doses.
