Its use in supporting or treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is primarily grounded in scientific interest, though the evidence base is limited and modest. Hemicellulose is considered a soluble or semi-soluble fiber, and dietary fiber supplementation is a common non-pharmacologic recommendation for IBS patients, particularly those with constipation-predominant IBS (IBS-C). Some clinical studies and reviews have indicated that soluble fibers (such as psyllium and partially hydrolyzed guar gum) can help improve symptoms like constipation and stool consistency in IBS, while insoluble fibers may exacerbate symptoms. Hemicellulose, as a component of certain fiber supplements (e.g., Sunfiber, which contains partially hydrolyzed guar gum—a hemicellulose derivative), has been included in some studies, but direct, robust evidence for hemicellulose alone is relatively sparse. Overall, the scientific support for hemicellulose specifically in IBS is indirect and extrapolated from broader fiber studies, with few trials evaluating hemicellulose as a standalone intervention. Guidelines generally recommend soluble fiber, but do not single out hemicellulose as uniquely beneficial.
