Fleabane is a common name referring to several species in the Erigeron and Conyza genera (family Asteraceae). Traditionally, various fleabane species have been used in folk medicine across Europe, North America, and Asia, with references to their use as diuretics and supportive agents for urinary tract issues, including infections. For example, Erigeron canadensis (Canadian fleabane) has historical uses among Native American and early European settlers as a tea to promote urination and "cleanse" the urinary tract. In traditional Chinese medicine, fleabane species such as Erigeron breviscapus have been used for their purported anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties.

However, while historical records document these uses, there is little modern scientific evidence to validate fleabane's efficacy for urinary tract infections (UTIs). Most contemporary herbal medicine sources reference its traditional use for urinary complaints, but robust clinical trials or pharmacological studies specifically targeting UTIs are lacking. Some in vitro research has noted mild anti-inflammatory or antimicrobial effects from extracts of certain fleabane species, but these findings are preliminary and do not directly translate to clinical benefit for UTIs. Therefore, the rating for evidence is low, and the justification is primarily based on tradition.
