Elephant's Head (Pedicularis spp.) has a history of traditional use among Native American and herbalist communities for treating headache, particularly tension-type headaches. The aerial parts of the plant have been used as a mild nervine and muscle relaxant, which may explain its application in headache relief, especially in cases thought to be related to muscular tension or nervous stress. Historic ethnobotanical records and herbal literature, such as the writings of Michael Moore and other North American herbalists, mention Pedicularis as an adjunct for relaxing skeletal muscles and alleviating tension, which could indirectly help relieve some types of headaches. However, there is a lack of modern clinical studies or robust pharmacological data confirming its efficacy or mechanisms in headache treatment. Thus, while the use of Elephant's Head for tension headache is primarily justified by tradition, the strength of evidence is weak and largely anecdotal.
