Evidence supporting the use of: Bergenia
For the health condition: Cough (spastic)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bergenia, particularly the species Bergenia ciliata and Bergenia ligulata, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani. In these systems, the plant is commonly referred to as "Pashanbheda" and is used for a variety of ailments, including respiratory conditions like cough and bronchitis. The traditional rationale for its use in cough (specifically spastic or spasmodic cough) is often based on its purported demulcent and anti-inflammatory properties, which are believed to soothe irritated mucous membranes and reduce the frequency or severity of coughing.
Scientific evidence supporting Bergenia's use for spastic cough is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies indicate that extracts of Bergenia species possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, but direct studies on their efficacy in treating cough, especially spastic cough, are lacking. The plant contains bioactive compounds such as bergenin, catechin, and gallic acid, which may contribute to its traditional medicinal effects, but clinical research specifically targeting cough is insufficient. Therefore, while Bergenia's use for cough is well documented in traditional medicine, robust scientific validation remains limited, and the evidence for its effectiveness in spastic cough is weak (evidence rating: 2).
