Evidence supporting the use of: Asam gelugor
For the health condition: Parasites (nematodes, worms)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Asam gelugor (Garcinia atroviridis) is traditionally used in Southeast Asian folk medicine, including Malay and Thai practices, as a remedy for various ailments, including as an anthelmintic (to expel intestinal worms and parasites). Historical accounts and ethnobotanical surveys document the use of decoctions and extracts from its fruit and rind for this purpose. However, the scientific validation for such effects is limited. Only a few in vitro or animal studies have evaluated related Garcinia species, with variable results, but there is a lack of direct, rigorous scientific studies specifically on Asam gelugor’s efficacy against nematodes or helminthic parasites in humans. The traditional use may be due to the fruit’s sourness, presence of organic acids (notably hydroxycitric acid), and possible secondary metabolites, though their direct antiparasitic mechanism has not been established. Overall, while there is historical and traditional precedent for using Asam gelugor for worms, the current level of scientific evidence is low, and more research is needed to validate its efficacy and safety for this indication.
