Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

8-Prenylnaringenin (8-PN) is a prenylated flavonoid found primarily in hops (Humulus lupulus) and is recognized as one of the most potent phytoestrogens. Scientific research on 8-PN has focused largely on its estrogenic activity, with several studies examining its potential benefits for menopausal symptoms, bone health, and hormone-related conditions. Regarding aging and its prevention, the evidence is limited but growing.

Experimental research suggests that 8-PN may exert anti-aging effects by modulating oxidative stress and influencing estrogen receptor pathways. Some animal and in vitro studies indicate that 8-PN can upregulate antioxidant enzymes and reduce markers of cellular damage associated with aging. Additionally, its estrogenic effects may contribute to the maintenance of skin elasticity and bone density, both of which decline with age. However, the majority of clinical research to date has focused on menopausal symptom relief rather than direct anti-aging outcomes.

There is currently a lack of large-scale, high-quality human trials specifically evaluating 8-PN for aging prevention or longevity. Most supportive evidence is preclinical or extrapolated from its estrogenic and antioxidant properties. As such, while there is a scientific rationale and some preliminary evidence, the strength and quality of the data are modest, and further research is needed to establish clear benefits for aging prevention.
