Evidence supporting the use of: Vitamin D
For the health condition: Lesions
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Vitamin D is scientifically validated to play a role in the health of the skin and in the healing of certain types of lesions, particularly those related to immune or inflammatory conditions. Vitamin D receptors are present in many types of skin cells, and vitamin D is involved in modulating cell growth, repair, and immune function. Clinical research has shown that vitamin D deficiency can be associated with delayed wound healing, and supplementation may improve healing in deficient individuals. For example, topical vitamin D analogues (such as calcipotriol) are commonly used in dermatology to treat psoriatic lesions and some other inflammatory skin diseases, based on substantial evidence of efficacy in reducing lesion severity and promoting lesion resolution.
Additionally, observational studies and some interventional trials suggest that maintaining adequate vitamin D levels can support faster recovery from skin injuries, including ulcers and chronic wounds. However, the evidence for vitamin D supplementation as a general treatment for all types of lesions (such as traumatic, infectious, or neoplastic lesions) is less robust, and the benefit appears most pronounced in individuals with deficiency or in specific lesion types (e.g., psoriatic plaques, pressure ulcers). Overall, while vitamin D is not a cure-all for every lesion, there is moderate evidence supporting its role in the management of certain lesion types, especially when deficiency is present.
