Evidence supporting the use of: Fungus
For the body system: Mitochondria
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Fungi, particularly medicinal mushrooms such as Cordyceps, Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), and Shiitake (Lentinula edodes), have been studied for their effects on mitochondrial function and cellular energy metabolism. Scientific research indicates that polysaccharides and other bioactive compounds found in these mushrooms can enhance mitochondrial biogenesis, improve ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production, and protect mitochondria from oxidative stress. For example, studies on Cordyceps have shown increased cellular ATP levels and improved endurance in animal models, which are linked to enhanced mitochondrial function. Reishi and Shiitake have demonstrated antioxidant activities that help reduce mitochondrial damage caused by free radicals.
While these findings are promising, most studies have been preclinical (in vitro or animal models), with limited large-scale human trials. The traditional use of these fungi in Asian medicine for vitality and stamina also aligns with their potential mitochondrial benefits. Overall, there is a moderate level of scientific evidence supporting the use of certain fungi to support mitochondrial health, but further research, especially in humans, is needed to fully validate their efficacy.
