For the body system: Testes
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Fadogia agrestis is a shrub native to parts of Africa, particularly Nigeria, and its use as a traditional remedy is well documented in the context of supporting male reproductive health, including purported benefits for libido and testosterone levels. In folk medicine, extracts from the stem are taken to enhance sexual function and vigor, and it's commonly used as an aphrodisiac. However, scientific research on Fadogia agrestis is limited. Few animal studies, mostly in rodents, have suggested potential increases in testosterone levels and improvements in sexual behavior after supplementation with Fadogia agrestis extracts. For example, a handful of studies from the early 2000s reported increased serum testosterone and mounting frequency in rats. Nonetheless, there is a lack of robust, peer-reviewed human clinical trials to substantiate these effects. Furthermore, some animal studies have raised concerns about possible toxicity at higher doses. In summary, while the use of Fadogia agrestis to support the testes and male sexual function is rooted in traditional practice and supported by preliminary animal data, there is currently insufficient scientific validation, especially in humans, to firmly support its efficacy or safety for this purpose.
