Carotene, particularly beta-carotene, is a precursor to vitamin A, an essential nutrient well known for its role in maintaining eye health. Scientific studies have shown that vitamin A is critical for the function of the retina, especially in low-light conditions, as it forms part of the visual pigment rhodopsin. Deficiency in vitamin A can lead to night blindness and, in severe cases, complete blindness. Beta-carotene is converted by the body into vitamin A as needed, making it a safe dietary source. Clinical trials, such as the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS), found that supplementation with beta-carotene, in combination with other antioxidants, reduced the risk of progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in certain populations. However, beta-carotene supplementation is not recommended for smokers due to studies linking it to an increased risk of lung cancer in this group. The evidence supporting the use of carotene for general eye health and prevention of deficiency is strong, but its effectiveness in treating existing eye diseases is less clear. Overall, there is robust scientific validation for the role of carotene as a dietary component that supports the eyes, primarily due to its conversion to vitamin A.
