Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vitamin E has a long-standing traditional association with reproductive health, dating back to its discovery. The vitamin was first isolated in 1922 and was originally called "tocopherol," derived from Greek words meaning "to bear offspring," after researchers observed that rats fed a diet deficient in vitamin E became infertile. This early observation led to its reputation as a "fertility vitamin," particularly for its perceived role in supporting both male and female reproductive function. Historically, vitamin E supplements have been marketed for their supposed benefits in improving fertility, supporting healthy pregnancy, and enhancing sexual function.

However, scientific validation for most of these traditional uses in humans is limited and generally inconclusive. While vitamin E is a crucial antioxidant, and oxidative stress is known to impact reproductive health, clinical trials in humans have produced mixed results. Some studies suggest that vitamin E supplementation may improve certain semen parameters in men with infertility linked to oxidative stress, but evidence for broader reproductive benefits, such as improved fertility outcomes in women, is lacking or inconsistent. Currently, vitamin E is best recognized for its general antioxidant properties rather than specific or robust effects on the reproductive system in humans.
