For the body system: Sympathetic Nervous System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) has a long history of traditional use, particularly in aromatherapy, where it is believed to promote relaxation, relieve stress, and elevate mood. These effects are indirectly related to the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) because this branch of the autonomic nervous system is responsible for the 'fight or flight' response, and reducing stress could theoretically support its balance. In traditional practices, bergamot essential oil is often used in diffusers or diluted in massage oils to help ease tension and promote a sense of calm, which may be interpreted as supporting SNS balance. However, while some clinical studies suggest bergamot oil may reduce anxiety and improve mood, these effects are more closely tied to modulation of the parasympathetic nervous system or general stress reduction rather than direct support of the SNS. Direct scientific studies linking bergamot specifically to improved function or support of the sympathetic nervous system are lacking. Most claims are based on historical use and anecdotal reports rather than robust scientific data. Therefore, while there is a traditional rationale for its use in this context, scientific validation remains limited.
