Within the Bach system, Mimulus occupies a specific and well-defined role. Mimulus is described as the remedy for known fears. Whenever one is frightened or anxious about something, and can say what that "something" is, then Mimulus is the indicated remedy. Mimulus fears are those of everyday life: fear of public speaking, of the dark, of aggressive dogs, of illness and pain. Phobias can also be Mimulus fears if the cause of the fear — whether spiders, birds, or open spaces — can be named.

Mimulus is also used as a type or personality remedy for those who tend generally to be nervous, timid, and shy — people who might blush easily or stammer, and who will usually avoid social occasions and any event where they will be in the limelight.

The preparation method in the Bach system is based on the infusion of flowers in spring water under sunlight, followed by preservation in brandy. The liquid, called the mother tincture, is filtered and mixed with brandy, which acts as a preservative. The remedies can be taken orally diluted in a glass of water, or applied directly to pulse points such as the wrists, temples, and behind the ears.

Phenylpropanoid Glycosides (PPGs) in Mimulus guttatus

Yellow monkeyflower (Mimulus guttatus DC., Phrymaceae) has long been a model plant species for studies in genetics, evolution, and ecology, including plant-animal interactions. Nonetheless, exceedingly little was known about its secondary chemistry. Researchers have discovered that the foliage of yellow monkeyflower contains a diverse suite of phenylpropanoid glycosides (PPGs), a class of compounds with many known biological activities.

Using ¹H and ¹³C NMR and UV and MS chromatography techniques, five PPGs were positively identified from the leaves of yellow monkeyflower. Four of these compounds occur in other species and one is previously undescribed. UV and high-resolution tandem MS data also putatively identified 11 additional foliar compounds as PPGs.

The identified PPGs include verbascoside, isoverbascoside, calceolarioside, conandroside, and one novel compound designated mimuloside. These compounds are a chemically diverse group with documented antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties in other plant systems, though no pharmacological studies have been conducted specifically on Mimulus guttatus extracts in humans. This initial discovery and elucidation of yellow monkeyflower's secondary chemistry will be important for continued study of the genetics and ecology of this model species.

C-Geranyl Flavonoids in Mimulus bigelovii

Bioactivity-directed fractionation of the methanol fraction of the extract of Mimulus bigelovii by means of an axenic Leishmania amastigote assay and chromatographic techniques resulted in the isolation of four C-geranyl flavanones — diplacone (1), 3′-O-methyldiplacone (2), 4′-O-methyldiplacone (3), 3′-O-methyldiplacol (4) — together with a geranylated flavone, cannflavin A (5). These compounds were separated from M. bigelovii for the first time.

Geranyl-α-Pyrone from Mimulus aurantiacus Leaf Resin

Research cited in the scientific literature (Hare and Borchardt, 2002) describes the structure of a geranyl-α-pyrone from Mimulus aurantiacus leaf resin, adding to the documented diversity of terpenoid-linked compounds in the broader monkeyflower alliance. Carotenoids

The flowers of certain Mimulus species contain unique carotenoid pigments. Mimulaxanthin is among the carotenoid compounds identified in the flowers of Mimulus lewisii and related species. 4.1 Antiparasitic Activity (In Vitro Evidence Only)

The most directly relevant pharmacological investigation of a Mimulus species in peer-reviewed literature concerns the antiparasitic properties of C-geranyl flavonoids isolated from Mimulus bigelovii.

Study design and results: Bioactivity-directed fractionation of the methanol extract of Mimulus bigelovii using an axenic Leishmania amastigote assay yielded four C-geranyl flavanones and one geranylated flavone (cannflavin A). These compounds were separated from M. bigelovii for the first time. All compounds showed moderate antileishmanial activity against axenic Leishmania donovani amastigotes with IC₅₀ values ranging from 4.8 to 14.6 μg/mL. The compounds were also tested against the related kinetoplastid parasite Trypanosoma brucei brucei, and they showed activity with IC₅₀ values ranging from 1.4 to 7.2 μg/mL.

More specifically, four C-geranyl flavones (diplacone, 3′-O-methyldiplacone, yellow oil, and 3′-O-methyldiplacol) and one geranylated flavone (cannflavin A) were isolated from Mimulus bigelovii. The IC₅₀ value was determined to be 7.5 μg/mL for both 3′-O-methyldiplacone and yellow oil against axenic amastigotes. 3′-O-Methyldiplacol obtained an IC₅₀ value of 7.2 μg/mL, and cannflavin A obtained an IC₅₀ value of 14.6 μg/mL, both tested against axenic amastigotes.

Evidence strength: This is purely in vitro (cell-based) data from isolated compounds. There are no animal model studies or human clinical trials evaluating Mimulus extracts for antiparasitic indications. The evidence is preliminary and exploratory only.

4.2 Emotional and Psychological Uses — Bach Flower Remedy Context (Clinical Trial Evidence)

The predominant context in which Mimulus is presented as a supplement or remedy for human use is as one of Dr. Bach's 38 flower essences. This is the area with the greatest body of clinical evaluation, though not specifically targeting Mimulus in isolation.

Systematic Reviews and RCTs

A systematic review assessed whether Bach Flower Remedies (BFRs) are safe and efficacious by searching MEDLINE, Embase, AMED, and the Cochrane Library from inception until June 2008, and performing a hand-search of references from relevant key articles. Efficacy was assessed by including all prospective studies with a control group, and safety by also including retrospective observational studies with more than 30 subjects. Two authors abstracted data and determined risk of bias. Four randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and two additional retrospective observational studies were identified and included in the review.

Three RCTs of BFRs for students with examination anxiety and one RCT of BFRs for children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) showed no overall benefit in comparison to placebo. Due to the number and quality of the studies, the strength of the evidence is low.

A separate systematic review restricted to randomised clinical trials reached a consistent conclusion. Seven such studies were located. All but one were placebo-controlled. All placebo-controlled trials failed to demonstrate efficacy. It is concluded that the most reliable clinical trials do not show any differences between flower remedies and placebos.

The solutions do not have a characteristic scent or taste of the plant because of dilution. The dilution process results in the statistical likelihood that little more than a single molecule may remain; it is claimed that the remedies contain an "energetic" or "vibrational" nature of the flower and that this can be transmitted to the user. No credible pharmacological mechanism has been proposed or demonstrated for ultra-dilute flower essences, and the claimed mechanism has no established basis in chemistry or pharmacology.

The Yavapai used a decoction taken as tea for stomachache. No scientific study has investigated Mimulus preparations for gastrointestinal endpoints in animals or humans.

No standardized or measured dosages are recorded in the ethnobotanical literature for traditional Mimulus preparations. The Kawaiisu and others used decoctions of stems and leaves as a steam bath; the Shoshoni applied poultices of crushed leaves directly to wounds; and the Yavapai consumed a decoction as a tea. Safety Profile of Bach Flower Remedies (Including Mimulus Essence)

Most of the available evidence regarding the efficacy and safety of BFRs has a high risk of bias. Based on the reported adverse events in the six included trials, BFRs are probably safe. In total, only four adverse events were reported in subjects taking BFRs across those trials, suggesting a low acute adverse event burden at the dilutions used.

When taken by mouth, Bach flower remedies are possibly safe when used in moderation. Since most Bach flower remedies contain little or no active ingredient, these products are not expected to cause harm. But they are preserved in brandy and therefore contain alcohol.

Alcohol Content — Specific Interactions and Contraindications

The alcohol used as preservative in Bach flower essences is the primary documented safety concern. The remedies contain brandy, so a person taking disulfiram (Antabuse) for alcohol use disorder should avoid them. People who are pregnant or breastfeeding should also not use the remedies.

The Bach Centre in England recommends that persons taking disulfiram (Antabuse) as part of treatment for alcohol abuse should consult their physicians before using any of the Bach flower essences. Disulfiram works by changing the body's metabolism of alcohol in such a way that anyone taking the medication will experience nausea, dizziness, chest pains, and other unpleasant symptoms if they ingest even a small amount of alcohol. Although the amount of alcohol in four drops of Rescue Remedy is very small, it could conceivably trigger a reaction to disulfiram.

Stock solutions are preserved in alcohol, so those with sensitivities may wish to dilute further or allow the alcohol to evaporate before use.

Drug Interactions

Individuals should discuss any other medications they are taking with their healthcare provider, though no known drug interactions with Bach flower remedies exist beyond the disulfiram-alcohol interaction noted above.

Adverse Events

There are no documented cases of allergic reactions in the clinical literature, although as with any natural product, individual sensitivities cannot be entirely ruled out. No specific side effects have been reported in children or pregnant women, and the remedies have been used in pediatric and perinatal settings without adverse outcomes.
