Magnesium Complex Ultra | Heart, Brain & Kidney Support
Explore our Magnesium Complex ultra guide: dual-form Magnesium citrate & malate for heart, brain, kidney, and nervous system support. Highly soluble capsules.
What Is Magnesium Complex Ultra and Why Does It Matter?
Magnesium is the fourth most abundant cation in the human body and a critical cofactor in more than 300 enzyme systems that regulate energy metabolism, neuromuscular function, cardiovascular health, bone integrity, and psychological well-being. Despite its importance, emerging evidence confirms that nearly two-thirds of the population in the western world is not achieving the recommended daily allowance for Magnesium β a deficiency problem contributing to various health conditions.
Nature's Sunshine Magnesium Complex delivers this essential mineral in two highly soluble organic forms β Magnesium citrate and Magnesium malate β specifically chosen for optimum effectiveness. This Magnesium Complex ultra formulation is designed to support the brain, heart, and kidneys, three systems that depend heavily on adequate Magnesium status for normal daily function.
Two capsules of Magnesium Complex provide 184 mg of Magnesium. Organic forms of Magnesium such as citrate and malate are generally more soluble and have higher bioavailability than inorganic forms like Magnesium oxide. Research shows that Magnesium citrate has high solubility even in water (55%) and is substantially more soluble than Magnesium oxide in all states of acid secretion.
Why Two Forms of Magnesium Work Better Together
Not all Magnesium supplements are created equal. The form of Magnesium determines how well your body can actually absorb and use it. This Magnesium Complex ultra pairs citrate and malate β both organic salts β to deliver highly soluble Magnesium that your body can put to work efficiently.
Magnesium citrate is one of the most bioavailable forms available as a supplement. Its high water solubility means efficient absorption in the digestive tract. Magnesium malate similarly involves Magnesium chelated to an organic acid (malic acid), giving it the favorable solubility and absorption characteristics shared by organic Magnesium compounds.
Magnesium serves as an indispensable cofactor for ATP synthesis β the energy currency of every cell. Mg2+ plays a pivotal role in transition state formation during ATP synthesis, making it essential for cellular energy generation across virtually all tissues. It also functions as a cofactor for the Na,K-ATPase pump, which regulates ion transport across cell membranes, and participates in protein synthesis, blood glucose control, and blood pressure regulation.

Who May Benefit from Magnesium Complex Ultra
Because Magnesium deficiency is so widespread β an estimated 56 to 68% of Americans do not obtain enough Magnesium daily to meet the RDA β a broad range of people may benefit from a Magnesium Complex ultra supplement. The RDA for adult men is 400β420 mg/day, while for adult women it is 310β320 mg/day, and many diets simply fall short.
Certain groups face an elevated risk of inadequacy. Older adults are especially susceptible because Magnesium absorption and retention decrease with age, medication use (particularly diuretics) can deplete Magnesium, and dietary restrictions may limit intake. Men older than 70 and teenage girls are most likely to have low intakes.
Individuals with gastrointestinal disorders, those with type 2 diabetes, people with alcohol dependence, and anyone on long-term medications such as proton pump inhibitors or diuretics may also have greater Magnesium needs. Early signs of deficiency include fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite, and muscle cramps β symptoms that can worsen to numbness, tingling, abnormal heart rhythms, and personality changes if left unaddressed.
Anyone focused on heart health, nervous system support, or kidney wellness may find this dual-form formula particularly relevant. If you're unsure whether Magnesium supplementation is appropriate for your situation, our naturopath offers free consultations to help you evaluate your individual needs.
How to Take Magnesium Complex Ultra
Take 2 capsules twice daily with a meal.
Each bottle contains 100 capsules. Taking the supplement with food supports absorption and may help minimize the mild gastrointestinal effects (such as softening of stool) that some people experience with Magnesium supplements. Side effects are generally more common at higher doses and with inorganic forms of Magnesium like Magnesium oxide β organic forms such as citrate and malate tend to be gentler on the digestive system.
Important Safety Notes
If you take any medications, be aware that Magnesium can interact with certain drugs. Magnesium may decrease the absorption of bisphosphonates (such as alendronate) β separate doses by at least 2 hours. It can form insoluble complexes with tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics; take the antibiotic at least 2 hours before or 4β6 hours after Magnesium. Loop and thiazide diuretics deplete Magnesium through increased urinary excretion, while proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) taken for prolonged periods can cause low Magnesium levels. Magnesium may also reduce the absorption of gabapentin by approximately 20%.
Hypermagnesemia from supplements is rare in individuals with normal kidney function, as the kidneys efficiently excrete excess Magnesium. However, risk is substantially elevated in individuals with impaired renal function. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting any new supplement regimen.

Frequently asked questions
What forms of Magnesium are in this Magnesium Complex ultra?
This formula contains two organic forms: Magnesium citrate and Magnesium malate. Organic forms of Magnesium are generally more soluble and have higher bioavailability than inorganic forms. Magnesium citrate in particular has been shown to have high solubility even in water (55%) and is substantially more soluble than Magnesium oxide in all states of acid secretion.
How much Magnesium does each serving provide?
Two capsules of Magnesium Complex provide 184 mg of Magnesium. The suggested usage is 2 capsules twice daily with a meal, which would provide 368 mg of Magnesium per day across both servings.
How does Magnesium support heart and cardiovascular health?
Research suggests Magnesium plays a well-documented role in cardiovascular health. It regulates cardiac ion channels, vascular tone, and endothelial function. Large meta-analyses and prospective cohort studies consistently associate higher Magnesium levels with lower risks of coronary heart disease, atrial fibrillation, and heart failure. Studies also suggest supplementation may produce modest but significant reductions in blood pressure, and Magnesium supplementation has been shown to significantly reduce arterial stiffness in a 24-week RCT. In 2022, the FDA approved a qualified health claim stating that consuming diets with adequate Magnesium may reduce the risk of high blood pressure, though it noted the evidence is inconsistent and inconclusive.
Can Magnesium help support kidney health?
Research suggests that Magnesium is a well-established inhibitor of calcium oxalate crystallization in urine. In a landmark double-blind RCT, new kidney stones formed in only 12.9% of treated subjects compared to 63.6% on placebo. Magnesium supplementation may also reduce urinary oxalate excretion and raise urinary citrate β both key protective factors against stone formation. The kidneys themselves are the primary regulators of whole-body Magnesium homeostasis.
Are there any side effects or drug interactions I should know about?
Magnesium supplements can cause mild gastrointestinal effects such as softening of stool, nausea, or cramping, though these are more common at higher doses and with inorganic forms. Magnesium can interact with certain medications, including bisphosphonates, tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics, diuretics, proton pump inhibitors, and gabapentin. Always separate Magnesium from antibiotics and bisphosphonates by at least 2 hours. Consult your healthcare provider if you take any medications or have impaired kidney function.
How common is Magnesium deficiency?
Very common. It is estimated that 56 to 68% of Americans do not obtain enough Magnesium daily to meet the recommended dietary allowance. Groups at greatest risk include older adults (due to decreased absorption and increased medication use), individuals with gastrointestinal disorders, those with type 2 diabetes, and people with alcohol dependence. Early signs of deficiency include fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite, and muscle cramps.
