Zinc is scientifically validated to play a role in wound healing and injury recovery, although the strength of evidence is moderate. Zinc is an essential trace element involved in numerous biological processes critical for tissue repair, such as DNA synthesis, cell division, and protein synthesis. Clinical studies have demonstrated that zinc deficiency impairs wound healing, and supplementation in deficient individuals can improve outcomes. Zinc is a cofactor for multiple enzymes (e.g., metalloproteinases) involved in collagen formation and immune function, both vital for proper tissue regeneration after injury.
Topical zinc oxide and zinc sulfate have been used for decades in the treatment of skin injuries, ulcers, and burns, with some studies showing faster healing times and reduced infection rates compared to placebo. Oral zinc supplementation may be beneficial for people with zinc deficiency or poor nutritional status but has less clear benefit in well-nourished individuals. Some reviews and meta-analyses suggest a modest benefit for wound healing in specific populations, such as patients with chronic ulcers or burns, but not universally.
While zinc is not a panacea for all injuries, its role in supporting the body’s natural repair mechanisms is well-documented, especially where deficiency is present. Routine supplementation in the absence of deficiency is not universally recommended. Overall, zinc's use in injury support is grounded in both basic science and clinical research, though the impact may be greatest in those with marginal or overt deficiency.
