Evidence supporting the use of: Collagen
For the health condition: Injuries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Collagen is a primary structural protein in the human body, particularly abundant in connective tissues such as tendons, ligaments, skin, and cartilage. Its use in supporting or treating injuries, especially those involving connective tissues, draws support from both biochemical plausibility and a growing body of scientific research. Collagen supplements, often in the form of hydrolyzed collagen peptides, are believed to support the body's natural repair processes by providing amino acids necessary for collagen synthesis. Clinical studies have demonstrated potential benefits of collagen supplementation for joint health, such as reduction in joint pain and improved function in athletes and individuals with osteoarthritis. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in Current Medical Research and Opinion (2008) found that collagen hydrolysate supplementation reduced joint pain in athletes. Another study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (2017) showed that specific collagen peptides improved tendon and ligament repair in animal models. Despite these findings, the evidence is not universally robust. Many studies have small sample sizes or are conducted on animals rather than humans. There is a need for larger, high-quality randomized controlled trials to fully establish efficacy, especially for acute injury healing. Nonetheless, current evidence justifies the cautious use of collagen supplements in supporting injury recovery, especially in the context of connective tissue repair and joint health.
