Evidence supporting the use of: Clerodendrum indicum
For the health condition: Injuries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Clerodendrum indicum, commonly known as Turk's Turban or Skyrocket, is a medicinal plant widely used in traditional medicine, particularly in South and Southeast Asia. Its use in the support and treatment of injuries—such as wounds, bruises, and related inflammation—stems primarily from ethnobotanical practices. Traditional healers have applied poultices made from the leaves or other parts of the plant to wounds or injuries, attributing anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and analgesic properties to it. Several ethnomedicinal surveys document its topical application for cuts, sores, and swellings in rural communities.
While there is limited scientific validation, some preliminary laboratory studies have identified the presence of bioactive compounds in Clerodendrum indicum, such as flavonoids, saponins, and phenolics, which may contribute to anti-inflammatory or antimicrobial effects. However, these studies are generally in vitro or animal-based, and there is a lack of well-designed clinical trials specifically investigating its efficacy in treating human injuries. As such, the evidence supporting its use for injuries is rooted primarily in traditional usage, with a modest but not robust level of scientific plausibility. The overall evidence rating for its effectiveness in supporting or treating injuries is therefore moderate-to-low.
