Evidence supporting the use of: Bone Marrow
For the health condition: Injuries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Bone marrow is used in the medical field primarily for its rich content of stem cells, which have the ability to differentiate into various cell types, including those needed for tissue repair and regeneration. Scientific research supports the use of bone marrow-derived stem cells (BMSCs) in treating certain types of injuries, particularly those involving bone, cartilage, and some soft tissues. For example, bone marrow aspirate concentrates are used in orthopedic surgery to support the healing of bone fractures, non-unions, and cartilage defects. The underlying mechanism involves the recruitment of mesenchymal stem cells and growth factors from the bone marrow, which can enhance tissue regeneration and modulate inflammation. Several clinical studies and animal models have demonstrated that BMSCs can improve healing rates, especially in complex or poorly healing injuries. However, the degree of benefit varies, and large-scale, high-quality randomized controlled trials are still limited. The evidence is stronger for orthopedic applications (e.g., bone defects, osteonecrosis) than for soft tissue injuries. Bone marrow transplantation is also a well-established treatment for certain blood-related conditions but is not generally used for standard injury healing. In summary, while not a panacea for all types of injuries, the use of bone marrow—specifically its stem cell content—has a scientifically validated role in supporting the healing of certain musculoskeletal injuries, with moderate-quality evidence supporting its use.
