Evidence supporting the use of: Aquilegia viridiflora
For the health condition: Injuries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Aquilegia viridiflora, commonly known as green columbine, has traditional uses in herbal medicine, particularly in some regions of Asia such as China, Mongolia, and parts of Russia. In traditional Mongolian and Chinese folk medicine, the plant has been used topically to aid in wound healing and to treat injuries such as cuts, bruises, and sores. These uses are based primarily on ethnobotanical records and oral traditions, which attribute wound-healing and anti-inflammatory properties to various parts of the plant, including the leaves and roots.
However, scientific validation for these uses is lacking. There are very few, if any, rigorous pharmacological studies that have investigated the efficacy or safety of Aquilegia viridiflora for treating injuries. The active compounds in the plant have not been well characterized in the context of wound healing, and there are no published clinical trials supporting its effectiveness. Furthermore, related species in the Aquilegia genus can contain toxic compounds (such as cyanogenic glycosides), raising concerns about safety without proper preparation and knowledge.
In summary, while Aquilegia viridiflora is used in traditional medicine for injuries, this practice is not supported by robust scientific evidence. Its use for this purpose is thus best characterized as traditional, with a low level of evidence (rated 1) due to the absence of modern clinical studies.
