Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ampelopsis, particularly Ampelopsis japonica (commonly known as "bai lian" in Traditional Chinese Medicine), has a long history of use in East Asian herbal traditions for supporting the healing of injuries, particularly bruises, sprains, swelling, and trauma-related conditions. In traditional practice, it is believed to "dispel blood stasis," "reduce swelling," and "relieve pain." These uses are primarily documented in classical herbal texts and are part of various topical and internal formulations for trauma care. The root and vine are most commonly used, often in combination with other herbs.

However, modern scientific studies directly investigating the efficacy of Ampelopsis for injury recovery are limited. Some in vitro and animal research has shown anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-edematous properties, suggesting possible mechanisms for its traditional applications, but these findings are preliminary and not specific to human injury healing. There are few, if any, high-quality clinical trials in humans evaluating its effectiveness for trauma or injury. As such, while the traditional use is well established, the scientific evidence base remains weak, and more rigorous studies would be needed to substantiate its role in injury treatment.
