Cortisol, a glucocorticoid hormone produced naturally by the adrenal cortex, is widely used in synthetic form (as hydrocortisone, prednisone, dexamethasone, etc.) to treat autoimmune disorders. Its use is strongly supported by scientific evidence. Corticosteroids like cortisol exert potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects, which are critical in the management of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, multiple sclerosis, and inflammatory bowel disease. These drugs inhibit multiple inflammatory pathways, suppress cytokine production, and decrease the activity of immune cells that drive autoimmune pathology. Numerous randomized controlled trials and decades of clinical experience have confirmed their efficacy in rapidly controlling disease flares, reducing tissue damage, and improving quality of life for patients with autoimmune conditions. While long-term use is associated with significant side effects (such as osteoporosis, infection risk, and metabolic disturbances), the benefits for short-term disease control are well-established. Current treatment guidelines from major medical organizations recommend corticosteroids as a mainstay or adjunctive therapy for many autoimmune disorders, especially during acute exacerbations. Thus, the use of cortisol and related steroids in autoimmune disease management is grounded in robust scientific validation.
