For the body system: Adrenal Glands
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is valued as an adaptogen—an herb believed to help the body adapt to stress and support overall vitality. In TCM, reishi is often prescribed to "nourish the spirit" and "strengthen Qi," concepts that are loosely associated with adrenal function and stress resilience in Western herbalism. The connection between reishi and adrenal gland support is therefore primarily traditional, based on its reputation for helping the body cope with stress, rather than direct scientific evidence of effects on adrenal glands themselves.
Scientific studies on reishi have focused largely on its immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. While there is some evidence that reishi may reduce markers of stress or improve well-being in animal studies and limited human trials, there is little direct research on its effects on adrenal hormones such as cortisol or on adrenal gland structure or function. Thus, while reishi is commonly marketed as an "adrenal support" supplement in the wellness industry, this use is mainly justified by historical and traditional usage, rather than robust scientific validation.
