Evidence supporting the use of: Mineral ascorbate
For the body system: Adrenal Glands
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Mineral ascorbate, a buffered form of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) combined with minerals such as sodium, calcium, magnesium, or potassium, has traditionally been used to support the adrenal glands. The rationale for this use arises from the fact that the adrenal glands contain some of the highest concentrations of vitamin C in the body and that vitamin C is involved in the synthesis of adrenal hormones, particularly cortisol. Historical naturopathic and holistic health traditions have advocated vitamin C supplementation, particularly in buffered forms like mineral ascorbates, to help mitigate "adrenal fatigue" or to support stress responses. However, while it is established that vitamin C is necessary for adrenal function and that deficiency impairs adrenal hormone synthesis, robust clinical trials demonstrating that supplementation with mineral ascorbate (as opposed to general vitamin C) supports adrenal health in healthy individuals or those with stress-related fatigue are lacking. Most scientific evidence pertains to severe deficiency states (e.g., scurvy) rather than the enhancement of adrenal function in non-deficient individuals. Therefore, its use is primarily justified by tradition, not strong scientific evidence.
