Respiratory Support

What Is ALJ® and Why It Matters

ALJ® is a liquid herbal formula from Nature's Sunshine designed to provide protection for the respiratory system against potentially harmful airborne particles. It nourishes the body's cleansing mechanisms and immune system to help them fight challenges from these particles, promotes proper lung function, and assists the body through seasonal changes.

The formula brings together five time-honored botanicals — Boneset aerial parts, Fenugreek seeds, Horseradish root extract, Mullein leaves extract, and Fennel seeds — each with a long history of traditional respiratory use. ALJ® comes in a convenient 2 fl oz liquid extract for easy absorption.

Whether you're navigating seasonal shifts, dealing with occasional sinus congestion, or simply want to give your respiratory system ongoing nutritional support, ALJ® offers a thoughtful blend of herbs that have been valued across cultures for centuries. What's inside

Key ingredients

Extract of Boneset Aerial Parts — 300 mg
Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum) is a North American perennial that has been used traditionally for centuries by Indigenous peoples of the eastern woodlands as well as by Eclectic and Physiomedical practitioners. It is historically classified as a diaphoretic, expectorant, and anti-inflammatory remedy for the respiratory mucosa. Boneset has a well-documented traditional role in supporting the upper respiratory tract during acute infections, including colds, coughs, bronchitis, and nasopharyngeal catarrh, and has been traditionally used to help loosen and clear mucus from the respiratory tract. Eclectic physicians employed Boneset during respiratory illness partly to help prevent pulmonary complications. Its expectorant action is noted across multiple historical sources, and modern herbalists continue to use it for bronchial conditions with congestion. While in vitro studies have demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity — including significant down-regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1α, IL-1β, and chemokines — clinical evidence in humans remains absent, and all health applications rest on traditional use supported by preclinical data.
Fenugreek Seed — 300 mg
Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is an aromatic medicinal plant with a history of use stretching back approximately 6,000 years across Ayurvedic, Traditional Chinese, and Middle Eastern medicine systems. In the context of ALJ®, Fenugreek is valued as a traditional expectorant. Its high mucilage content creates a soothing coating effect on irritated airways and is traditionally understood to stimulate mucus secretion to help thin viscous respiratory secretions. Naturopathic pharmacopeias classify it as a soothing expectorant for productive coughs. Fenugreek also has traditional use as a restorative herb for recovery from illness, supporting appetite restoration and energy during convalescence — traditional convalescent use for post-fever weakness is well-documented in Ayurvedic and Middle Eastern practice.
Horseradish Root — 300 mg
Horseradish (Armoracia rusticana) is a member of the Brassicaceae family that has been used since ancient times both as a culinary condiment and a folk medicinal herb. It contains sinigrin and allyl isothiocyanate (AITC), which acts as a TRPA1 agonist that stimulates mucociliary secretion and exhibits antimicrobial properties against bacteria commonly associated with sinus infections. Research on a licensed European combination product containing Horseradish and nasturtium (Angocin® Anti-Infekt N) has yielded meaningful clinical data: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (n=384) demonstrated faster healing of bronchitis symptoms compared to placebo, and a prospective cohort study of 1,649 adults found symptom reduction comparable to standard antibiotics for sinusitis and bronchitis with fewer side effects. The German Commission E has endorsed Horseradish for respiratory tract infections. It is important to note that these clinical studies used the combination product, not isolated Horseradish. Traditionally, Horseradish has long been used as a warming, stimulating expectorant for sinus congestion, bronchitis, and seasonal respiratory complaints, with the pungent AITC vapors promoting respiratory drainage and nasal clearance.
Mullein Leaves — 300 mg
Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) is a medicinal herb with a legacy reaching back nearly 2,000 years — Dioscorides first recommended it for pulmonary conditions in the first century AD. Its leaves and flowers contain mucilage, saponins, flavonoids (including quercetin and verbascoside), and iridoid glycosides such as aucubin. The mucilage provides a demulcent coating that soothes irritated respiratory membranes, while saponins act as natural expectorants to help loosen mucus. A 2021 review published in PMC confirmed that anti-inflammatory phytochemicals in Mullein, particularly quercetin, correlate with its traditional respiratory uses. A 2005 study in Phytotherapy Research found expectorant and bronchodilatory effects in animal models. Mullein has extensive cross-cultural traditional use for coughs, bronchitis, sore throat, asthma, sinus congestion, and seasonal respiratory challenges — across European, Turkish, and Native American folk medicine traditions. It has also been traditionally used for hay fever and allergic respiratory complaints, attributed to its anti-inflammatory constituents. However, large controlled human clinical trials are absent, and evidence remains primarily traditional with preclinical support.
Fennel Seed (in Vegetable Glycerin) — 300 mg
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is one of the world's most important medicinal plants, documented in traditional Iranian medicine, Ayurveda, and European monographs (EMA, Commission E, ESCOP) as a respiratory herb with bronchodilatory, expectorant, and antispasmodic properties. Its volatile oil — dominated by trans-anethole — has been shown to enhance ciliary motility of the respiratory apparatus, and Fennel essential oil inhalation stimulates tracheal smooth muscle contraction, promoting expectoration of mucus and foreign particles. Commission E and ESCOP recognize Fennel for catarrh of the upper respiratory tract. Additionally, Fennel's antispasmodic mechanism involves direct interaction with voltage-gated L-type calcium channels, reducing smooth muscle contraction. While preclinical data support smooth muscle relaxation in the airways, human respiratory trials are absent, and the evidence for bronchial-specific effects remains traditional.

How It Works

How ALJ® Supports Your Respiratory System

ALJ® works through multiple complementary mechanisms drawn from its five botanical ingredients. Together, they address several aspects of respiratory comfort:

  • Expectorant support: Boneset, Fenugreek, Horseradish, Mullein, and Fennel all have documented traditional use as expectorants. Their various active compounds — from Mullein's saponins to Horseradish's allyl isothiocyanate to Fennel's trans-anethole — work through different pathways to help loosen and move mucus from the respiratory tract.
  • Soothing and demulcent action: Fenugreek's mucilage and Mullein's mucilaginous constituents create a protective, soothing coating on irritated mucous membranes in the airways and throat.
  • Sinus and nasal support: Horseradish root is particularly noted for its ability to stimulate mucociliary secretion and promote sinus drainage. Its pungent isothiocyanates are traditionally understood to clear nasal passages.
  • Respiratory cleansing: The formula nourishes the body's cleansing mechanisms and immune system to help fight challenges from airborne particles and seasonal irritants.

Because ALJ® is a liquid extract, the botanicals are delivered in an easily absorbable form, making it a convenient choice for daily respiratory support.
