Sinopsis

Quassia se refiere a la madera amarga de Quassia amara (nativa de América del Sur y el Caribe) o Picrasma excelsa (de Jamaica y otras regiones del Caribe), ambas miembros de la familia Simaroubaceae. Es conocida por sus compuestos intensamente amargos, especialmente la cuasina y la neocuasina, que le confieren potentes propiedades digestivas, antiparasitarias, antifúngicas e insecticidas.

Tradicionalmente, la quassia se utiliza para estimular la digestión, mejorar el apetito y expulsar parásitos intestinales como los oxiuros y los áscaris. Sus principios amargos estimulan la secreción de enzimas digestivas, lo que la hace útil en el tratamiento de la dispepsia, la digestión lenta y el estreñimiento. La quassia también se utiliza en fórmulas de apoyo hepático y de la vesícula biliar, donde favorece el flujo de bilis y la desintoxicación.

En preparaciones tópicas o como enjuague, el extracto de quassia se utiliza para combatir los piojos y la sarna, y ha sido incluido en remedios herbales para erupciones cutáneas, infecciones fúngicas y afecciones inflamatorias del cuero cabelludo. Uso Histórico en Medicina:
La quassia tiene una larga historia medicinal en las Indias Occidentales, América del Sur y Europa. Fue introducida por primera vez en la medicina europea en el siglo XVIII tras ser traída de Surinam por un esclavo africano liberado llamado Quassi, quien la utilizaba como un poderoso remedio para las fiebres y los parásitos—de ahí el nombre botánico Quassia amara en su honor.
