Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Naringenin is a flavonoid commonly found in citrus fruits such as grapefruits and oranges. There is emerging scientific interest in its potential benefits for inflammatory skin conditions like psoriasis due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Several preclinical studies—primarily in vitro and animal models—have shown that naringenin can modulate pathways involved in inflammation and oxidative stress, both of which play significant roles in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. For example, studies have demonstrated that naringenin can inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β, and can suppress the activation of NF-κB, a key transcription factor in inflammatory responses. Despite these promising findings, there is currently a lack of robust human clinical trials investigating naringenin’s efficacy specifically for psoriasis. Most of the existing evidence is limited to cellular and animal studies, which cannot directly predict clinical effectiveness or safety in humans. As such, while the scientific rationale is plausible and early results are encouraging, the evidence base remains preliminary. Until well-designed human studies are conducted, naringenin should not be regarded as a proven or primary treatment for psoriasis, but rather as a compound of interest for further research.
